Shortly after the Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus, the Christian message spread rapidly to areas outside Jerusalem. For people who had little or no Jewish background, a different type of message about Jesus was needed — one that explained how the Gentiles fit into God’s plan of salvation as it comes to us through Jesus. Luke, in his Gospel, offers an image of Jesus as one who intended his message and gifts to reach out to all people, not just Jews. This work analyzes Luke’s Gospel with a focus on the Gentiles’ adaptation of Judaism to their own world, and the adaptation of their own world to the message of Jesus Christ. It provides the ordinary reader with a solid basis for understanding the Gospel of Luke. Through his work as a teacher, lecturer, retreat master, author, and parish priest, Father William A. Anderson has shown a deep commitment to the development of adult catechesis. These works reflect his concern about the real pastoral questions he has encountered in his efforts to make the faith come alive for others.
