In spite of the idealism and commitment of many, this remians a disenchanted world. In his powerful new book the great Latin American liberation theologian Jon Sobrino shows that global capitalism is driven by a cruel dynamic of oppression and greed, which inevitably dehumanises people, destroys the human family, and threatens mother earth. Yet, he argues, it is the poor themselves, who, paradoxically, offer the only way to salvation for the world. We must work for a new civilisation that will give everyone access to the material and cultural goods that make for a truly human life, and reduce the enormous and growing gap between those who have and those who haven't.
