'It is with a great deal of joy that I welcome the musician, the singer, the presider, the deacon, the liturgist, et al… to this collection of music for the Easter Vigil. I am pleased to offer this work to the Church in collaboration with Oregon Catholic Press and under the auspices of the Wisconsin Province of the Society of Jesus. I am also pleased to present this work as a study of the Vigil in the spirit of scholarship and investigation that the Roman Church has invited. But this is not an historical study. It is an investigation by a composer and a litrugist primarily into the structure, the language nad the 'world' that the Easter Vigil creates. As a liturgist, I am interested in how each part of the service works and how each part fits together to form a whole and complete worship experience. As a composer, I have labored to find words and music that will open the 'affective climate', the 'atmosphere' that I perceive in the Vigil. So, listen to the music and read the notes to the musical pieces - in a kindly fashion, if you can - to hear, from one point of view, something about the work we all do at the Vigil; so that, with all God's people, we might 'Behold the Glory of God!' I've included in notes to each of the following songs, hymns and acclamations a running commentary on the order of service for the Easter Vigil. I hope here to provide a context within which each musical piece both lives by itself and relates to the whole of the Vigil liturgy.' - Roc O'Connor, SJ
